Hypnotherapy treatment for stopping smoking/vaping

Hypnotherapy provides a unique approach to stopping smoking or vaping as it targets the subconscious mind, addressing psychological and emotional factors which subsequently deal with the cravings and withdrawal symptoms.

How is hypnotherapy used to help stop smoking/vaping?

Hypnotherapy helps alter the behaviours and associations related to nicotine use helping individuals to live a smoke-free or vape-free life. Hypnotherapy involves a combination of relaxation, direct suggestions and positive visualisation which helps to address the underlying triggers.

Hypnotherapy is a great tool for smoking / vaping cessation, involving the following steps:

  1. Initial assessment and consultation – understanding the client’s smoking / vaping habits and motivations and then sets clear goals for quitting.

  2. Induction into hypnosis – techniques are employed to relax the client and put them into a hypnotic state which then puts them into a heightened state of suggestibility and focus.

  3. Deepening the hypnotic state – the therapist deepens the hypnosis by using techniques such as counting down or focussing on a specific point. A deeper hypnotic state ensures the client is more receptive to the suggestions to follow.

  4. Therapeutic suggestions – the therapist provides direct suggestions to aimed at changing perceptions and behaviours related to smoking / vaping. Positive suggestions reinforce the benefits of quitting and negative associations are also created associated with vaping / smoking such as foul taste in the mouth.

  5. Visualisation and imagery – the client is guided to see themselves as a non-smoker/vaper and then imagines their smoke free future, experiencing positive changes.

  6. Addressing triggers and underlying issues – the therapist helps the client to identify triggers that lead to smoking or vaping and then provides suggestions for healthier coping mechanisms to replace smoking or vaping.

  7. Creating anchors – the therapist may create mental or physical anchors to be used by the client when they feel the urge to smoke or vape.

  8. Post-hypnotics suggestions – suggestions are provided by the therapist that take effect after the session, such as feeling a sense of pride or empowerment each time the client does not smoke or vape. Suggestions are also used to reinforce the client’s long-term commitment to remaining smoke/vape free.

  9. Awakening from the hypnosis – the client is gently brought out of hypnosis by the therapist and a brief discussion then takes place to reinforce progress and set progress expectations.

  10. Follow up and self-hypnosis – additional sessions may be scheduled to address new challenges or reinforce progress to strengthen the client’s resolve. They may also be taught self-hypnosis, empowering them to manage cravings and stress independently.
